Hurricanes can be terrifying. The thought of strong winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding can leave anyone feeling anxious. However, being prepared can make a significant difference. At our YouTube channel, we have created a series of videos that focus on hurricane preparation. These videos are designed to help you and your family stay safe during hurricane season.

In this blog post, we will explore the importance of hurricane preparedness, what you can learn from our videos, and practical steps you can take to ensure your safety.

Why Hurricane Preparedness Matters

Hurricane preparedness is crucial for several reasons. First, it can save your life and your family's lives. When you are prepared, you know what to do when a storm approaches. This knowledge can help you make quick decisions that can protect you and your loved ones.

Second, being prepared can reduce property damage. If you take steps to secure your home and belongings, you can minimize the impact of a hurricane. This can save you big money and huge amounts of stress in the long run. You worked your tail off to get where you are in life, so do what you need to do to keep it.

Lastly, preparedness fosters a sense of control. When you have a plan in place, you feel more confident facing the storm. This peace of mind is invaluable during such a stressful time. You got this!

What You Will Learn from Our YouTube Videos

Our YouTube channel features a variety of videos that cover many different aspects of hurricane preparedness. Here are some key topics we address:

1. Creating an Emergency Evacuation Kit

One of the first steps in hurricane preparedness is assembling an emergency evacuation kit. Our videos guide you through what to include in your kit.

  • Water: At least one gallon per person (and pet) per day for three days.

  • Non-perishable food: Enough for at least two weeks days and a manual can opener. Review our short YouTube video, Real Life Hurricane Prep, Video of our "Orange Cooler" EVAC Cooler. (While the general rule has been to have a 3-day supply of food on hand, the newest guidance is to have two weeks' worth of food on hand out of which you can take 3 days' worth of food with you if you need to EVAC.)

  • Flashlights: With extra batteries. Good flashlights. No junk.

  • Important paperwork: Review our short YouTube video, Real Life Hurricane Prep, The Hot Box for EVAC. (We refer to our box of important paperwork as our "Hot Box.")

  • First aid supplies: Including any necessary medications. (Video coming soon!)

  • Evacuation Toolbox: There are some basic tools that could be vital during an evac situation. Review our short YouTube video, Real Life Hurricane Prep, EVAC Toolbox for more information.

By watching our videos, you will learn how to create a comprehensive emergency evacuation kit tailored to the needs of you and your family.

2. Developing an Evacuation Plan

Knowing when and how to evacuate is essential. Our videos provide tips on creating an effective evacuation plan. (Videos coming soon!)

  • Identify evacuation routes: Know your Evac Zone, the safest routes to take to safety and know that you may not need to travel far away.

  • Plan for pets: Ensure you have a plan for your furry friends.

  • Communicate with family: Make sure everyone knows the plan.

These steps can help you evacuate quickly and safely when necessary.

3. Securing Your Home

Protecting your home is another critical aspect of hurricane preparedness. Our videos show you how to secure your property effectively. (Videos coming soon!)

  • Board up windows: Use plywood or storm shutters.

  • Trim trees: Remove any branches that could fall on your home.

  • Bring in outdoor items: Secure or store patio furniture and decorations.

By following these tips, you can reduce the risk of damage to your home.

4. Staying Informed

Staying updated on weather conditions is vital during hurricane season. Our video explains how to stay informed. (Video coming soon!)

  • Use weather apps: Download reliable weather apps for real-time updates.

  • Listen to local news: Stay tuned to local radio or TV stations.

  • Follow official social media accounts: Keep an eye on updates from emergency services.

Being informed can help you make timely decisions and keep you and your family safe.

5. Understanding Hurricane Categories

Hurricanes are classified into categories based on their wind speeds. Our video breaks down what each category means and how it affects your preparedness. (Video coming soon!)

  • Category 1: Some damage possible, still dangerous.

  • Category 2: More serious damage, trees uprooted.

  • Category 3: Can cause significant damage and power outages.

  • Category 4: Well-built homes can be seriously damaged. Numerous power outages.

  • Category 5: Catastrophic damage is expected. Most buildings damaged or destroyed. Major electrical outages.

Understanding these categories can help you gauge the severity of an approaching storm, but always be aware that storms are not totally predictable and can change from one category to another and they can also change direction. Also remember that every storm is different!

Practical Steps to Prepare

Now that you know what our videos cover, let’s discuss some practical steps you can take to prepare for hurricane season.

Make a Checklist or Use Several Checklists for Different Tasks Like We Do

Creating a checklist can help you stay organized. Write down everything you need to do before a storm hits. This can include:

  • Assembling your emergency kit.

  • Securing your home.

  • Planning your evacuation route.

Having a checklist ensures you do not forget any important tasks.

We use multiple checklists, and they will be presented here in our blog pages and as you know, they are contained in the back of our book Real Life Hurricane Prep! (We urge you to customize the lists to your situation to make them as effective as possible!)

Stay Connected

Communication is key during and after a hurricane. Make sure you have a way to stay in touch with family and friends.

  • Set up a group chat: Use messaging apps to keep everyone informed.

  • Establish a meeting point: Choose a safe location where you can all gather if needed.

  • Share phone numbers and email addresses: Make sure everyone has what they need to remain in contact with each other.

  • Keep it short & sweet!  Due to limited communication capabilities in your local telecommunication network that can occur during and after storms, it may be best to limit your text messages to four to six words. Long text strings and emails may not go through. (During hurricane Ian, we could only text a few words at a time. No fun!)

Staying connected can provide comfort during a stressful time.

Practice Your Plan

Once you have a plan in place, practice, practice, practice! Conduct a family drill to ensure everyone knows what to do.

  • Walk through your evacuation route: Make sure everyone is familiar with it.

  • Review your emergency kit: Check that everything is in working order and ready to go if needed.

Practicing your plan can help reduce panic when a storm approaches.

Resources for Further Learning

In addition to our YouTube videos, there are many resources available to help you prepare for hurricanes.

  • FEMA: The Federal Emergency Management Agency offers valuable information on disaster preparedness.

  • Local emergency management offices: Check your local government’s website for specific resources and guidelines.

  • Community workshops: Many communities offer workshops on disaster preparedness.

Utilizing these resources can enhance your understanding and readiness.

The Importance of Community Support

During hurricane season, community support is vital. Neighbors can help each other prepare and stay safe.

  • Share resources: If someone is unable to gather supplies, offer assistance.

  • Check on elderly neighbors: Ensure they have what they need to stay safe.

  • Organize community meetings: Discuss preparedness strategies and share information.

Building a strong community can make a significant difference during emergencies.

Final Thoughts

Hurricane season can be daunting, but with the right preparation, you can face it with confidence. Our YouTube videos are a valuable resource to help you and your family stay safe. Your family is counting on you, so get it right, do it right, and keep it tight.

By learning how to create an emergency kit, develop an evacuation plan, secure your home, and stay informed, you can take control of your safety.

Remember, preparedness is not just about having supplies; it is about having a plan and knowing what to do.

Stay safe, stay informed, and watch our hurricane prep videos to ensure you are ready for whatever comes your way.
